I Bokassa sono fra le più felici proposte dello stoner e hard rock contemporaneo. Così freschi, frizzanti, ed originali da essere notati perfino da Lars Ulrich, che li ha voluti come supporter – assieme ai Ghost – nel tour 2019, che ha toccato anche Milano. Recentemente (ecco la nostra recensione) è uscito il loro secondo lavoro, il divertentissimo Crimson Riders. Il terzetto norvegese inizierà poi in autunno un tour europeo come headliner.
Ciao Olav! Come te la passi? Il tuo nuovo album è uscito qualche tempo fa, come ti senti a riguardo? Sei ancora emozionato?
Sì, sono felice, sta andando molto bene, e in realtà è in classifica sia in Norvegia che in Inghilterra!
Ho avuto l’occasione di ascoltare Crimson Riders in anteprima, e ho notato moltissimi campi di ispirazione. C’è questa ambientazione space western: perchè l’avete scelta?
Oh, intendi l’ultima canzone dell’album, Immortal Space Pirate? Beh, ci sono molti stili diversi, non volevamo essere confinati in un solo genere, il nostro cantante ha scritto la maggior parte delle canzoni, ma ad ogni modo ci abbiamo lavorato tutti insieme.
Allora, sono curiosa: chi è il Captain Cold One?
Parla di un ragazzo che conosciamo, ma anche di un amico che tutti hanno, che si ubriaca da far schifo ed è divertente quando è, anche ubriaco, ancora orgoglioso di che persona è. Penso che tutti abbiano un amico come lui.
Ora, vorrei parlare dell’ultima canzone, Immortal Space Pirate 2. Di cosa si tratta il primo episodio?
La prima parte era sul nostro album precedente, Divide And Conquer, ed è la continuazione di quella storia. Se ricordo bene, è anche la nostra canzone più lunga! La maggior parte delle nostre canzoni è molto breve, preferiamo non perdere tempo, solo dire quello che abbiamo da dire e basta. Abbiamo provato qualcosa di diverso.
Puoi dirmi la storia?
Dipende dall’interpretazione. È un tizio che vaga nello spazio, rubacchiando intorno, abbiamo cercato di non dire troppo, in modo che le persone potessero trarre da sole le proprie conclusioni.
Parlando della cover di Crimson Riders, cosa rappresenta?
Era da un po’ che cercavamo una copertina, ci siamo seduti, e abbiamo vagato per Instagram, per ore, e ci siamo imbattuti in questo artista, e abbiamo pensato che uno dei suoi lavori fosse davvero fantastico. Il suo nome è Johan Aberg (cybernosferatu su Instagram), abbiamo solo pensato che l’immagine fosse perfetta per il disco.
Non ho avuto la possibilità di vedere il tuo concerto a Milano, quindi ti chiedo: c’è qualche canzone che hai scritto appositamente per essere suonata dal vivo?
Come band, ci siamo sempre preoccupati di come suonare meglio dal vivo, quindi è difficile dire se c’è qualche canzone che suona meglio dal vivo. Ma Captain Cold One sembra sempre andare sempre bene con la folla. Con quel chorus molto catchy.
Ti è piaciuto condividere il palco con Metallica e Ghost?
Decisamente. E ‘stato davvero istruttivo e interessante.
Perché hai pensato che Lars abbia scelto i Bokassa?
Penso solo perché gli piacciamo. Sono a quel punto che possono fare tutto ciò che vogliono, quindi hanno scelto i Ghost ovviamente e poi noi per il loro tour attorno al mondo. Quando abbiamo ricevuto la chiamata, non avevamo nemmeno una casa discografica, un booking o altro: avevamo fatto tutto da soli. È stato incredibilmente figo.
Quindi, bisogna essere molto bravo, ma anche un po ‘di fortuna …
Sì. E’ stato come vincere alla lotteria.
Sai, penso che sia perché hai questo suono, non tanto più sentito, perché nell’hard rock e nello stoner ci sono suoni totalmente diversi. Siete una band norvegese, ed è fantastico e strano allo stesso tempo: pensiamo sempre ai musicisti norvegese come un amanti del black, dediti al death metal e al folk metal, e così via. Come è successo a farti sembrare così diverso?
Penso che sia solo perché quando abbiamo iniziato la band, abbiamo creato questi riff, una volta lenti una volta molto veloci, e abbiamo cercato di combinarli con il punk e lo stoner, che sono un po’ l’uno l’opposto dell’altro: abbiamo trovato questo mix molto interessante.
Quindi è stata una cosa molto spontanea.
La chiave è scrivere ciò che ti diverte di più suonare.
Quali sono le tue influenze principali nella musica? C’è qualche artista che ti ha davvero influenzato in Divide and Conquer and Crimson Riders?
Uhm, ci sono alcune band a cui eravamo connessi quando abbiamo iniziato la band, era principalmente il nostro chitarrista a farci sapere di loro, come Clutch (un gruppo hard rock statunitense), Bronx, Mastodon. Ma siamo cresciuti ascoltando band giganti come i Metallica e gli Slayer, quel genere di cose che hai smesso di ascoltare quando sei come quattro.
Come hai trovato il pubblico in Italia?
E ‘stata la prima volta in tour che la gente ci ha davvero rallegrato quando siamo saliti sul palco, erano come Yeeah! Pioveva anche, ma il corvo di Milano ci ha fatto sentire più a nostro agio sul palco.
Avrai un futuro tour in prima pagina? Crimson Riders lo merita!
Stiamo annunciando presto il tour. Sarà inoltre in giro per l’Europa, a partire da novembre. Saremo di nuovo anche in Italia!

Hi Olav! How are you doing? Your brand new album went out some time ago, how do you feel about it? Are you still excited?
Yeah I’m happy, it’s been going very well, and it’s actually charted both in Norway and England!
I had the chance to premiere-listened Crimson Riders, and I’ve noticed so many different inspirations. There is this space western setting: how did you choose it?
Oh, you mean the last song of the album, Immortal Space Pirate? Well, there are lots of different styles, we didn’t want to be confined into just one genre, our singer wrote most of the songs but we were working on them altogether.
So, I’m curious: who is Captain Cold One?
It’s about a guy we know, but it’s also about a friend everybody has, who gets really really drunk and it’s funny when he’s, even drunk, still proud about what he is. I think everybody has a friend like him.
Now, I would like to talk about the last song, Immortal Space Pirate 2. What’s about the first episode?
The first part was on our previous album, Divide And Conquer, and it’s the continuation of that story. If I remember well, it’s also our longest song! Most of our songs are very short, we prefer to not waste time, to just say what we have to say and that’s enough. We tried something different.
Can you tell me the story?
It’s up to interpretation. It’s a guy who roams in space, scavenging around, we tried not to say too much about it, so that people could figure it out themselves.
Talking about Crimson Rides cover, what does it represent?
It’s really just beause we were looking for a cover, and we just sat and surf through Instagram, for hours, and we came across that guy, and we thought that one of his picture was really really cool.His name is Johan Aberg (cybernosferatu on Instagram), we just thought that the picture would fit the record perfectly.
I hadn’t the chance to see your gig in Milan, so I ask you: is there any song that you wrote especially for being played live?
As a band, we’ve always cared about how to sound better live, so it’s hard to say if there’s any song better sounding live. But Captain Cold One always seems to go very well with the crowd.
Did you enjoy to share the stage with Metallica and Ghost?
Definitely. It was really instructive and cool.
Why did you think Lars chose you?
I think just because he likes us. They’re at that point that they can do whatever they want, so they choose Ghost obviously and then us for their around-the-world tour. When we get their call, we didn’t even have a record company, a booking, or whatever: we did everything by ourselves. It’s been so cool.
So, you had to be very good, but also a little bit of luck…
Yes. It was like winning a lottery.
You know, I think that’s because you have this sound, not so much heard anymore, because in hard rock and stoner are totally different sounds. You are a norwegian band, and it’s awesome and weird at the same time: we always think about norwegian musician as blackster, devoted into death metal and folk metal, and so on. How did it happen to make you sound so different?
I think it’s just because when we started the band, we had this riffs, once slow once very fast, and we tried to combine them with punk, and stoner, kinda of opposite each other: we found that mix very cool.
So it was a very spontaneuos thing.
The key is to make stuff that you really enjoy yourself to play.
Which are you main influences in music? Is there any artist that really influenced you in Divide and Conquer and Crimson Riders?
Uhm, there are some band we were connected when we started the band, it was mainly our guitarist to let us know about them, like Clutch (an USA hard rock band), Bronx, Mastodon. But we grew up listening to giant bands like Metallica and Slayer, that kind of stuff you stopped listened when you are like fourtheen.
How did you find Italy audience?
It was the first time on tour that people really cheered at us when we entered the stage, they were like Yeeah! It was raining as well, but the crow in Milan made us feel more confortable on stage.
Will you have a future headline tour? Crimson riders deserves it!
We are announcing the tour soon. It will be moreover around Europe, beginning in november. We’ll be also again in Italy!
