Quante volte abbiamo cantato ”Somewhere over the raimbow”? La versione originale risale al 1939, quando a cantarla fu Judy Garland per la colonna sonora de ”Il mago di Oz”. Ma forse la versione più famosa risale al 1993, quando Israel Kamakawiwo’ole pubblicò l’album “Facing Future”. Nel disco inserì il medley delle canzoni ”Over the Rainbow’‘ e “What a Wonderful World” di Louis Armstrong. La versione, divenuta subito molto famosa, vide Israel accompagnarne le parole con l’ukulele. Ieri Google gli ha dedicato il suo ”doodle”, celebrandolo perché il musicista, conosciuto anche con gli pseudonimi di Bruddah Iz, o Bradda IZ, oppure semplicemente IZ, nacque a Honolulu (Hawaii), il 20 maggio 1959. L’artista avrebbe compiuto 61 anni. Kamakawiwo’ole purtroppo ci ha lasciati nel 1997 a soli 38 anni, a causa delle complicazioni legate ad una grave forma di obesità.
Lo celebriamo anche noi, riascoltiando il brano che lo rese immortale.
