I Nightwish sono fra le poche band metal capaci di rimanere sulla cresta dell’onda per più di vent’anni. Tutti i loro album sono concept album, e quasi tutte le tracce provengono dalla penna ispirata di Tuomas Holopainen, il geniale tastierista della band, aiutato talvolta dal chitarrista e cantante di supporto Marco Hietala.
La voce primaria, infatti, nel symphonic metal garbatamente neoclassico proposto dalla band, è, infatti, affidata ad una donna. La prima il cui nome fu legato ai Nightwish è infatti il soprano drammatico Tarja Turunen: algida dark lady, controllo vocale impeccabile, in grado di passare dal falsetto a calcare note scure senza alcuna paura, cosa espressa al meglio in Ghost Love Score.
Molto è stato speculato dai fan su un possibile innamoramento da parte di Tuomas nei confronti di Tarja, che però, a quanto pare, ne ha sempre rifiutato le avances, decidendo poi di sposare Marcelo Cabuli, uomo d’affari finlandese. Il penultimo album (seguito da Once) che vede la partecipazione di Tarja è infatti quello che contiene la suite di oltre dieci minuti Ghost Love Score, Century Child. Brano interamente composto da Tuomas Holopainen, è chiaramente (chissà se Tarja se ne è mai accorta) riferito agli effetti di un tradimento sull’animo di chi narra. Ulteriori indizi di questo dolore, direttamente causato dal comportamento della donna, che fu poi cacciata dalla band e sostituita da Anette Olzon, sono racchiusi nei brani Bye Beautiful e Master Passion Greed, tratti da The Poet and the Pendulum.
Se si va ad analzzare il testo di Ghost Love Score, vengono ripresi i temi tanto cari ai Nightwish della Tarja Era: l’anima di oceano, il continuo fluire dei sentimenti in una forma liquida, che connette tutti gli spiriti dell’umanità; le sirene, come messaggere di verità nascoste; ma, soprattutto, il refrain, ripetuto con insistenza, “My fall will be for you”.
Che dire, speriamo che Tuomas si sia arreso a questo amore impossibile; il suo dolore, però, ci ha lasciato una delle tracce più belle dell’intero metal moderno.
